Empowering Girls, Valuing the Family and Promoting Responsible/Sustainable Tourism on Sal Island

Science Center for Young People

An innovative educational program focused on three fundamental pillars: Sun, Wind and Sea, which define the natural identity of Sal Island. Aimed at young people, mainly girls, in secondary school, the center seeks to stimulate scientific thinking and innovation, initially on an itinerant basis and in partnership with schools and other scientific institutions, such as the Pavilion of Knowledge in Lisbon, Universities in Portugal and Cape Verde, Cape Verde Science Houses, schools on Sal Island.

Actions

  • Create science and technology programs that encourage the active participation of girls, exploring themes such as the Sun, Wind and Sea.
  • Establish female mentorships in science, technology and innovation, connecting them with professionals from the Pavilion of Knowledge and other institutions.
  • Develop practical workshops and events that demonstrate the role of women in science and technology, generating identification and inspiration.

Family and Community Dynamics

Inspired by the concept of "community family", the project creates spaces for interaction between local families, promoting mutual support, education and social inclusion.

Actions

  • Raise awareness among families about the importance of education and financial independence for girls, reducing cultural and structural barriers.
  • Create spaces for community dialog to encourage families to support their daughters in non-traditional paths.
  • Promote activities that involve mothers and fathers in valuing scientific knowledge and developing female leaders.

Sports

We believe in sport, surfing and kitesurfing as powerful tools for social transformation, promoting self-confidence, independence and leadership, as well as being able to create a new international female representation in a sport that is "king" in Sal but has almost no female representation. As this sport has a high economic return, practicing it can also open doors to increase the employability of girls.

Actions

  • Regular surfing and kitesurfing sessions with qualified instructors.

  • Personal development and leadership workshops to strengthen self-confidence.

  • Environmental awareness actions focused on preserving the oceans.

  • Training in sewing and designing board covers, with technical support and the supply of sewing machines and materials.

  • Involvement of local institutions for logistical support and accompaniment of participants.

Responsible/Sustainable Tourism

Encourages more conscious and educational tourism, involving hotel units to offer transformative experiences to visitors. Tourists are invited to share their knowledge and stories in exchange for benefits, promoting cultural exchange and learning about topics such as science, the environment and international relations.

Actions

  • Use tourism as an educational tool, encouraging tourists to share inspiring experiences and knowledge about female empowerment.

  • Create sustainable tourism experiences led by girls, training them as guides, interpreters and knowledge multipliers.

  • Establish partnerships with hotels and tour operators to financially support educational and sporting activities aimed at girls.
